Dr. Ian Gates

Dr. Gates specializes in the development and optimization of thermal-solvent recovery processes, reactive recovery processes and technologies, as well as reservoir simulation. He has been a lead investigator in the Centre over the last year and is looking forward to this additional commitment of his efforts to the Centre. His research focuses on optimized design of reactive heavy-oil recovery processes together with construction of a novel reservoir simulator that incorporates the required physics to address these complex processes in an integrative collaboration with the other researchers. Prior to coming on board as faculty member at the University of Calgary in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Ian was a Research Specialist with Imperial Oil Resources Limited in Oil Sands Recovery Research.Prior to that, he worked for 3M Company St Paul, MN) and Sandia National Labs Albuquerque, NM) after obtaining his PhD in Chemical Engineering (University of Minnesota). Dr. Gates is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA), the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), the Canadian Heavy Oil Sands Association (CHOA) and the Petroleum Society of the CIM.
