Dr. Steve Larter

One of the world's leading experts in the origin and chemical makeup of fluids in oil reservoirs, Dr.Steve Larter holds the University of Calgary's Canada Research Chair in Petroleum Geology. Dr.Larter was recruited from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the United Kingdom in 2004 and has more than 30 years' research experience in petroleum geology and geochemistry in both academia and industry (Unocal-USA).Named as one of the Top 10 Geologists in the U.K.in 2003, he has received numerous awards for his scientific contributions, including the Friendship Medal of the Peoples Republic of China
(2000) and the William Smith Medal of the Geological Society (1998). Before joining the Ingenuity Centre, Dr.Larter was the J.B.Simpson Professor of Geology at the University of Newcastle (U.K.)from 1989to 2004;visiting professor of petroleum geochemistry at the University of Oslo (Norway) from 1987 to 1989; and Senior Research Geochemist with Unocal Corporation (USA)from 1979 to 1986. Dr. Larter completed an MSc in organic chemistry and organic petrology in 1975, and a PhD in petroleum geochemistry in 1978, both from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (U.K.).
